Who is Roderick Robinson II?
Robinson was a four-star in the composites and attended Lincoln High in San Diego, California. Robinson was a consensus top-15 Running Back in the class. Robinson was a two-year sensation at Lincoln. As a Junior, Robinson rushed for 1,273 yards on 185 carries with 17 touchdowns. For his final season, he topped that by rushing for 2,378 yards on 217 carries with 37 touchdowns. Robinson would finish his High School career with 19 receptions for 176 yards and two additional touchdowns. He rounded out his profile with 12 receptions as a Senior and showcased soft hands for his size. Robinson was also a sure-handed runner, with only one fumble during that span. Robinson held 26 offers and initially committed to UCLA in the Spring of 2022. Georgia made a late offer before that commitment and would stay after Robinson, got him to flip late in the process, and ended up in Athens.
The expectation for his true Freshman season for 2023 was to be brought along slowly, as is the standard with Georgia. Branson Robinson tore his patella tendon, Andrew Paul needed more time from his ACL recovery, and Kendall Milton was slowed by nagging injuries. All of those moved his timeline up, and he saw action in the first two games of the season before succumbing to a high ankle injury in week three, which kept him out until week 11. Even though the Bowl game burned his redshirt, it showcased that he was fully healthy and a force in the backfield for Georgia. Robinson looked great and showcased all the traits that made him a highly coveted recruit. This offseason, Georgia brought in Trevor Etienne along with three freshmen. Andrew Paul moved on from the program, and Branson Robinson is expected to be brought back slowly. Robinson could be in line to be the 1B in the Georgia rotation, the short yardage back, and the thunder to Etienne’s lightning.
Strengths
Robinson has a solid chiseled frame and carries his weight well. Robinson is a fluid runner, and his thicker frame allows him to force a lot of missed tackles. Defenders must square up to take him down, as arm tackles and defenders taking bad angles will not bring him down. Robinson has enough lateral movement for his size to be effective once he finds a hole and can transition from the first to the second level as a runner. Robinson has enough movement to change direction but is best once he makes his initial cut and is a straight-line runner. As a Junior in High School, Robinson has verified measurements of 4.71 in the 40, 9-foot, 8-inch broad jump, and 31-inch vertical to go with 11.35 in the 100-meter and jumped 19 feet in the long jump. Those numbers with most prospects will only get better once they get into an elite program in College, where strength and conditioning coaches can hone their abilities.
From a high school perspective, those numbers are good for that size. His speed translates on the field, and Robinson can run away from the secondary. Robinson has good vision, allows his blocks to form, and showcases an excellent initial burst, as once he finds the hole, he can explode through it. Robinson uniquely blends power, size, speed, and athletic traits. With Etienne transferring in, Robinson should be the 1B for the 2024 season and can allow his body to transition to taking on a gradual workload. Coming off a high ankle injury, having Etienne there helps Robinson avoid being the lead back and have to take on 200+ carries. Robinson won’t have a lot of tread on the tires once the NFL starts looking at him in 2026. Etienne’s presence is positive for Robinson and not harmful. Robinson, at worst, will be the short/hard yardage back, and being the thunder in his first full year as a contributor should be viewed as a positive.
